Doing things we enjoy gives us pleasure and adds meaning to our lives. People with dementia need to be active and do things they enjoy; however, it’s not easy for them to plan their days and do different tasks. That’s where we come in and can make a positive impact. As dementia professionals, we will share with you the fundamentals of facilitating activities for individuals living with dementia to ensure they are able to understand, accomplish the activity goal, and enjoy themselves while participating in the activity.
Objectives:
Attendees will learn the fundamentals of facilitating activities for people living with dementia.
Attendees will learn how to modify activities based on cognitive and physical needs as well as likes and dislikes.
Attendees will learn about activities that should be avoided and why they should be avoided based on the level of difficulty and multiple steps.
Attendees will learn the benefits of sensory stimulation.
Attendees will learn what tools to use to obtain needed information to best serve their members living with dementia.
Presenters:
Corporate Center Director – Melanie Miranda-Lusby, MHA, CDP
Melanie Miranda-Lusby is the Corporate Center Director for Town Square Perry Hall, an Adult Medical Day Center that was developed as an innovative alternative to standard day options. Melanie is a graduate of the University of South Florida with a bachelor’s in Finance and Gerontology and a Master’s in Health Care Administration. Melanie has over 20 years of managerial experience in the financial and healthcare industries. Her passion is driven by her desire to make a difference in her members’ and caregivers’ lives. She has a strong knowledge of Alzheimer’s and Dementia as well as Gerontology. As a Gerontologist and Certified Dementia Practitioner, Melanie takes great pride in knowing that her Center is one that strives for excellence and quality of care while promoting an engaging and mentally stimulating environment. Her staff would describe her as “all in”, Melanie is very involved in the day-to-day processes of running the Center and is always willing to lend a helping hand no matter what the job is. As the wife of a Marine Corps Veteran, she is involved in multiple non-profit organizations that support our nation’s military. She is also a board member of the Maryland Association of Adult Day Services and a member of the Maryland Senior Resource Network. Melanie lives by the moto, one person can make a difference, and she strives to make a difference in every person’s life that she encounters.
Activities Manager – Keyonna Jordan
Keyonna Jordan is the Activity Manager for Town Square Perry Hall, an Adult Medical Day Center that was developed as an innovative alternative to standard day options. She is a professional with over 19 years of experience. Keyonna is a graduate of Beaufort Community College in Washington, North Carolina where she received her Activity Director Certification, became a member of NCCAP (National Certification Council for Activity Professional) and successfully completed MEPAP 1&2 (Modular Education Program for Activity Professionals) in Maryland as well as ServSafe Food Service Manager Certification. She has worked in both Adult Day Cares and in Long Term Skilled Nursing facilities. Keyonna is caring and reliable and is always reminded by her grandmother that she has found her calling. Keyonna lives by the moto “Activities is more than just Bingo.”
