Language Access in Medicare and More

Thursday, February 3, 2022
11:00 am12:15 pm

When: Thursday, February 3, 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m. PT/2:00-3:15 p.m. ET

Access to linguistically and culturally competent health care is a priority for the 4 million people with Medicare who are limited English proficient (LEP). This priority is heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic, reminding us that, whether in the hospital or over a telehealth platform, access to qualified interpreters and translated materials can be a matter of life or death. Although language access is a right enshrined in federal law, many LEP individuals continue to face barriers in health care. Fortunately, translations of Medicare & You 2022, the official U.S. government Medicare handbook, in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese are a new, in-language resource that people with Medicare, as well as enrollment counselors and advocates, can use to better understand their healthcare coverage and rights.

Please join Justice in Aging, the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA), and the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) for a presentation, Language Access in Medicare and More. The presentation will provide an overview of the Medicare & You handbook, how to access the new translations, and discuss language access in Medicare more broadly. The presentation will also include breakout sessions for advocates to discuss what issues LEP older adults are experiencing in Medicare with language access.

Please only register for the presentation if you intend on attending and participating in the breakout session. The presentation and breakout sessions will be in English. Closed captioning will be available during the presentation portion.
