More Than Three-Quarters of Low-Income Older Californian Tenants Are Rent Burdened

In 2016, more that three-quarters of low-income older Californians whose head of household is age 65 or over are "rent burdened," and more than half are "severely rent burdened." The shortage of affordable housing is a pressing issue in California.

Narrowing the Gap on Palliative Care in California

This new update finds dramatic increases in the number of palliative care programs and the number of patients served, and broader availability of programs statewide. Inpatient palliative care capacity for the entire state is now estimated to be sufficient to meet 43% to 66% of need, while community-based capacity is estimated to be sufficient to meet between 33% to 51% of need.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has released a new study examining why participation rates in disability programs like Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) vary based on where people live.

The findings also support previous research by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and other experts showing the correlation between health and socioeconomic factors such as wealth and education. People with higher socioeconomic status have better health and longevity outcomes.

Report Finds Untreated Tooth Decay is Hidden Epidemic Among Older Adults

A new report by the Center for Oral Health (COH) found that a significant number of older Californians are plagued by oral health problems despite the fact that dental disease is largely preventable. Data for this report was collected through oral health screenings of 2,372 older adults in California – conducted at 36 skilled nursing homes and 51 community sites that included congregate meal sites, adult day care centers and senior centers.

Coverage, Access, and Affordability in California: Key ACA Data 2013-2016

In 2014, CHCF launched ACA 411, an interactive online tool that provided baseline and trend data to help users track the impace of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on insurance coverage, access to health care, and affordability in California. As of 2018, CHCF no longer maintains the ACA 411 tool. However, its raw data is now available as an Excel file for download. The file includes approximately 50 indicators around coverage, affordability, and access to care.

In 2014, California became one of 13 states to implement a financial and administrative alignment demonstration called the Coordinated Care Initiative (CCI). Data collected for this research brief was built on Phase I results and included 19 additional interviews with provider stakeholders including physician providers, provider groups, CMC plan directors of provider networks, FQHCs, hospitals, management services organizations (MSOs), and LTC providers.
